Contact Details - The Kingsway Estate Project

The Project's Mission Statement

The project aims to deliver a client centred approach, drawing on the strengths of carious agencies and interventions to offer a seamless service to empower each individual client to work towards a drug free status, with an underlying philosophy of harm reduction.

Referral Pathways

Self-referral is the preferred rout though the project does accept professional referrals. A client may drop in on Thursday or telephone to make an appointment. The project works with clients registered with a Stainforth GP. Though under 18s, pregnant women and clients outside of this remit will be assessed and referred to the appropriate agency.

Leaflets and verbal information are available on all substances. This correlates to the current harm reduction strategy/law. Information is also available on a wide range of issues including housing; employment; education; legal issues; benefits and health. Sign posting and advocacy are also a key part of this intervention.

The Kingsway Estate Project

The SDP have recently produced a DVD which highlights one of Stainforth's problem areas and recalls the history of the Kingsway estate. Entitled, "The Rise and Fall of the Kingsway Estate", this a fascinating short film which is a poignant reminder of what was home for many of Stainforth's mining families.
Using footage shot with the help of Doncaster Community Arts, the film is interspersed with photographs of the estate's happier times, including street parties held during the 1953 coronation.
Now the estate has fallen into disrepair and is a sad shadow of its former self. The houses on Kingsway and the adjoining streets of Queens Crescent, Lord Street and Duke Street are well built solid affairs that must have seemed like palaces to the miners who came to Stainforth during the days of Hatfield Main Colliery's inauguration
Many of these families came from poorer areas in the north of England and for most; this was their first home with such extravagant facilities as electricity and hot and cold running water.

The houses still have the original outside toilet facilities, built into outbuildings that housed the toilet and coal house, though they were later re-modernised with inside facilities.
The DVD has many familiar faces, all residents of this forlorn estate. They talk wistfully about the happier times of years gone by, and in resigned tones of the need to move on and start anew.
